“DESDE MI BOLSILLO”

El pasado 20 de octubre, la banda terrorista ETA anunció en un comunicado grabado en video el final de más de medio siglo de muertes y terror. Como otros compañeros, llevaba varios días en Bilbao esperando el anuncio. Eran las siete de la tarde. Meplanté a dos palmos de la pantalla de la televisión y mientras escuchaba al etarra David Plaleer el comunicado del cese de la violencia, agarré mi Iphone, abrí Hisptamatic, atrapé la escena y en cuanto estuvo lista la imagen, la subí a Instagram. No perdí ni un segundo en elegir el mejor filtro, ni me planteé si la foto era buena o mala. Era la noticia del momento. La imagen del día. En cambio sí me preocupé de escribir un buen texto, breve y claro, contando lo que significaba ese anuncio de ETA. No hice más de lo que llevo haciendo hace más de 20 años en periódicos, revistas, radios y televisión: informar, comunicar, transmitir…. Por primera vez, utilicé Instagram como herramienta de comunicación. Y mi móvil como instrumento para captar el momento. Y valió la pena.
Tanto, que desde entonces busco, cuando la ocasión lo merece, una excusa para compartir noticias capturadas desde mi móvil. El proceso es espontáneo. Los que me conocen saben que mi galería en Instagram es un jardín desordenado de sentimientos. Mis fotos son lo más parecido a mí. Retrato tal y como soy. Por eso abuso de los autorretratos, porque me gusta reconocerme.
Utilizar Instagram para informar fue un proceso natural. ETA, el SIDA, el juicio por el asesinato de Ana Páez y los viajes a Senegal, Afganistán y Líbano… sentimientos, sensaciones e información.
Es verdad que algunas imágenes del viaje a Senegal no necesitaban carta de presentación. Pero no lo puedo ni quiero remediar. Soy periodista las 24 horas del día. Lo llevo en la sangre, tatuado en mi ADN. Por eso siempre miro, observo y escucho con ojos de periodista. Y pregunto, anoto, retengo, selecciono y comparto los datos de interés. En los textos de las imágenes de Senegal, no había noticias, había pura información. Cada día trataba de buscar, entre la gente, datos de interés que sirvieran para entender mejor las imágenes que compartía.
Confieso que la inmediatez y la respuesta de la gente a las imágenes y a los textos, a la información, me enganchó y animó a seguir por este camino. Cada uno tiene un estilo. Yo lo tengo en El Periódico de Catalunya, en el programa de televisión de Ana Rosa Quintana en el que colaboro y en la vida. Mis textos saben a Mayka. Quería que mis fotos de Instagram sonaran a Mayka, y creo que ahora, con el complemento de la información, lo he conseguido.
Todas las imágenes subidas en Instagram están disparadas con Iphone y solo con Iphone. ¿Por qué? Ni se la respuesta, ni me interesa demasiado. Me encanta hacer fotos. Desde hace un año mi móvil se ha convertido en un utensilio más para hacer lo que me gusta: capturar escenas que transmitan sensaciones, y compartirlas. No aspiro a más. El móvil me funciona, como me vale mi nueva Canon 60D. Cada herramienta me aporta algo. Ni mejor, ni peor. Diferente, pero igual de bueno para mi propósito de transmitir y compartir emociones y sentimientos. Mis imágenes con móvil no son mejores ni peores que las de la cámara convencional. Son diferentes. Y ni pretendo ni quiero elegir. Me gustan las dos maneras de ver y de disparar.
“FROM MY POCKET”

On October 20th, the terrorist group ETA announced in a videotaped statement the end of more than half a century of death and terror. Like other colleagues, I had been staying in Bilbao for several days waiting for the announcement. It was seven o’clock. I stood a few inches from the television screen while listening to David Pla reading ETA´s communique about the end of violence, I grabbed my iPhone, opened Hisptamatic, caught the scene and when it was ready, uploaded it to Instagram. I wasted no time choosing the best filter, nor did I ask myself if the photo was good or bad. It was the news of the moment. The image of the day. However, I did worry about writing a good text, brief and clear, about ETA´s announcement. Just what I’ve been doing for over 20 years in newspapers, magazines, radio and television, to inform, to communicate, to transmit …. For the first time in my life, I used Instagram as a communication tool. And my phone was the tool to capture the moment. And it was worth it.
So much that, since then, I seek, when the occasion is worth it, an excuse to share news captured from my phone. The process is spontaneous. Those who know me know that my feed in Instagram is like a disordered garden of feelings. My photos are the closest thing to me. I shoot as I am. That´s why I abuse of self-portraits, I like to recognize myself in them.
Using Instagram as a communication tool was a natural process. ETA, AIDS, the trial for the murder of Ana Paez and the travels to Senegal, Afghanistan and Lebanon … feelings, sensations and information.
It is true that some pictures of the trip to Senegal don´t need to be featured. But I can´t, nor want to help it. I am a journalist 24 hours a day. It’s in my blood, tattooed on my DNA. So I always look, look and listen with the eyes of a journalist. I ask, write, retain, select and share the interesting data. In the texts of the images of Senegal, there was no news, there was pure information. Each day I tried to find, among the people, interesting data which would help to understand better the shared images.
I confess that the immediacy and the response of people to images and texts, to the information, encouraged me and hooked me to continue this way. Each person has a style. I have it in “El Periodico de Catalunya”, on the television show by Ana Rosa Quintana with whom I collaborate, and in life. My texts taste like Mayka. I wanted my photos in Instagram to sound like Mayka sounds, and I think that now, with the addition of information, I have succeeded.
All the images uploaded in Instagram are shot with and only with Iphone. Why iphone? I don´t know the answer, nor do I care too much. I love taking pictures. Since a year ago my cell phone has become an aditional tool with which I do what I like: capture scenes that convey feelings and share them. I do not want anything else. The phone works for me, like my new Canon 60D does. Each tool gives me something. Not better, not worse. Different, but equally good for my purpose to convey and share emotions and feelings. My phone images are not better or worse than those of the conventional camera. They are different. And I do not pretend nor want to choose. I like both ways of seeing and shooting.
